A community is grieving after a child was killed and three others were injured when they were struck by a vehicle in Oakland.
Officials say it happened around 3:45 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of East Oak Street and Ramapo Valley Road. A mom and three kids were walking together, prosecutors say.
The victims were identified as a 32-year-old woman, a 6-year-old boy, a 4-year-old boy and a 9-month-old girl. Officials say it was the 4-year-old boy who died from his injuries at the hospital.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office also says that the 6-year-old boy suffered serious injuries and remains in the hospital. The mother and baby were treated and released.
The crash happened near a strip mall, a church and a doctor's office. The posted speed limit is 25 mph. Officials say that the driver of the vehicle who struck the victims remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The driver was identified as a 56-year-old woman.
Toys and pictures were found at the scene Friday morning as the community reacted to the news.
Ponds Reformed Church, located right next to the scene, posted on Facebook that they are holding the family, driver, first responders and witnesses “close in care and love.”
