The New Jersey Supreme Court has upheld the state’s authority to oversee the Paterson Police Department.
The court affirmed the legality of the 2023 takeover, which followed concerns over oversight, accountability and public trust.
State Attorney General Matthew Platkin said the ruling allows his office to continue its work with Paterson police, including reforms and crime reduction efforts.
Public Safety Monitor Isa Abbassi said the decision supports continued progress in rebuilding community relationships and reducing gun violence.
Officer in Charge Patrick Murray called the changes over the past two years the most meaningful in the department’s history.
